Alternative therapies can really help both carers of people with tremor and those who suffer with tremor. The NTF has been collating information on alternative therapies and are looking to increase this information over time.
While the NTF have a strong belief that alternative therapies can be useful, none of the information provided is a guarantee that any alternative therapy works and will help you. You should of course consult with relevant professionals before embarking on any therapy.
Below is a list of alternative therapies we currently have information on:
I have tried some others and have found these helpful but not a cure.
Exercise. A regular daily routine say 20minutes jogging or cross trainer enough to get the heart racing a little and slight sweat. This strengthens the body generally and particularly the heart. Helps keep you positive in mind, intellectuality good for you and keeps your emotions in better control. So good all round for your whole being.
Alexander technique.
I beleive a lot of people with tremor will experience anxiety and this will possibly result in body tensions particularly neck tension resulting lowering of the head, arched back and poor posture. These result in back problems. As well as reducing your anxiety levels which appears to be a side effect, and I understand people who go on stage use the technique frequently to help combat stage fright. Over time it will free the neck and body tensions and significantly improve your posture which has many health benefits. Have a one to one session just before some stressful event and you will be quite amazed at what looks quite a simple process. I used it to get through laser eye surgery and you have to keep very still without any medication or anaesthetic !!!
Holosync meditation technique
Lastly but not least this is quite an expensive technique to help you meditate, costs about £30 a month to buy the CDs. The principle is that you listen to very low frequency sounds through stereo headphones and the sounds affect your nervous system. You have to listen with your eyes shut for a whole hour every day at the same time. The Cds are progressive and deepen in intensity over the programme. They do have an effect and you will notice it just after the 1st time listening. I particularly noticed that I slept like a log as I chose the hour just before bedtime to listen. No more sweats and restlessness or racing mind at bedtime. Over time at least 18 months for me I have seen a gradual difference in my calmness and practically many tasks have become easier to handle and any shaking has been less intense and in some instances much reduced. The CDs are quite enjoyable to listen to and consist entirely of very realistic rainfall sounds which have deeper low frequency wave sounds in the background, although repetitive but they are never boring as they progress to deeper levels. If their is negative side effects and I'm not sure if their are any yet, however, I'm doing some testing on myself to see, if the sounds do suppress your nervous system as I think they do, then you can feel slightly unconnected and different to "your normal self" due to this unnatural calmness within you. Also your mind will try to stop you continuing with the process at every opportunity. The programme is designed to last over 5 years and apparently will "change your life". I've seen a few positive changes todate but am not sure how conclusive they are just yet and also if as claimed they are permanent. At worst the system does provide some calmness in your life which may result in tackling some of the anxiety. I'm not sure if I will continue the whole process just yet, this is work in progess.
I think the problem in my case is that I have a very high social phobia brought about I am fairly certain by the Essential Tremor. So reducing anxiety in my case is very important. I am not sure how the above would affect people who have the ET without the phobias but I think all of them have merits for anyone not just people affected by ET.
